titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of regenerated cellulose from viscose
abstract Regenerated cellulose filaments are made by extruding viscose prepared by xanthating alkali cellulose with at least 37% of carbon disulphide, based on the cellulose content of the alkali cellulose, into an aqueous coagulating bath containing sodium sulphate, up to 10% of sulphuric acid, at least 5% of zinc sulphate and less than 0.2% of a primary, secondary or tertiary aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monoamine having at least 4 carbon atoms but containing no radical of more than 8 carbon atoms, the amine being soluble in an aqueous sulphuric acid bath containing at least 5% of zinc sulphate and 9.5% of sulphuric acid to an extent of at least 0.15%. The percentage of carbon disulphide used for xanthation is at least 4.6 times the percentage of sulphuric acid in the bath. Preferred amines are di- and tri-ethylamine, butyl monoethanolamine, cyclohexylamine and N-methylcyclohexylamine. Other amines which may be used are dipropylamine, butylamine, dibutylamine, diethanolamine, ethyldiethanolamine, methyldiethanolamine, triethanolamine, dipropanolamine, propylpropanolamine, hexanolamine, amyldiethanolamine, butylmethylethanolamine, tetramethyleneimine, piperidine, hexyldiethanolamine and ortho-methyl-N-methylcyclohexylamine. The concentration of amine in the coagulating bath may be as low as 0.05% and is preferably 0.05 to 0.15%. The salt index of the viscose is preferably 10 or higher and its temperature is preferably 40 DEG C. or higher. The spinning bath is preferably maintained at 40-80 DEG C. and preferably contains 4-10% of sulphuric acid, 5-25% of sodium sulphate and 5-15% of zinc sulphate. The sulphates of other divalent metals may also be present. In an example, viscose prepared by xanthating alkali cellulose with 42% of carbon disulphide, based on the cellulose content of the alkali cellulose, ripened to a salt index of about 16, and containing 6.25% of cellulose and 5.75% of total alkali, calculated as sodium hydroxide, is spun at about 45 DEG C. into a bath at about 63 DEG C. containing 7.4% of sulphuric acid, 17.5% of sodium sulphate, 9.5% of zinc sulphate and 0.15% of diethylamine. Regenerated cellulose filaments produced as described above have low gel swelling values, no appreciable crenulation and skin-to-core ratios (when measured radially) greater than one. Specifications 533,309, 652,471, 652,746, 654,083, 712,623, 741,727 and U.S.A. Specification 2,536,014 are referred to.
