titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to film-forming compositions
abstract Steel panels, e.g. for vehicle bodies, which have been treated with a phosphate rust inhibiter are coated with (1) a primer containing about 52% by weight of soya oil modified glycerol phthalate resin and baked; (2) an undercoat comprising as film-forming material in lacquer solvents, 34% nitrocellulose, 49% shellac and 17% polyvinyl butyral, and 28.5% based on the weight of film-forming material, of pigment; and (3) a top coat of a resinous coating composition (see Group IV (a)) comprising a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate in weight ratio 80:20 to 98:2, an alkyl acid phosphate, e.g. monobutyl ortho phosphate, and a saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid containing 5-20 carbon atoms, e.g. azelaic acid, together with a pigment, e.g. carbon black, plasticizer, e.g. butyl benzyl phthalate, and solvents, e.g. a mixture of toluene, xylene, methylethylketone and methoxyethyl acetate. In composition (3) the phosphate may be replaced by mono-octyl, monooctadecyl, or monostearyl orthophosphates; dibutyl, dihexyl or didodecyl orthophosphates; or dibutyl pyrophosphate; and the acid by adipic, pimelic, suberic, sebacic, hendecanedioic, dodecanedioic, glutaric, brassylic, thapsic, eicosanedioic, a -butyl-a -ethyl glutaric or b -isopropylazelaic acid. Other solvents, e.g. acetone, methyl isobutyl ketone, butyl ether, butyl acetate and glycol monoacetate; plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl phthalate, 2-ethylhexyl benzyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phosphate and triphenyl phosphate; pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, silica, china clay, talc, metallic oxides, silicates, chromates, sulphides, sulphates and organic pigments may be used and other film-forming materials, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, nitrocellulose, oil-modified alkyd resins, alkylated amino-aldehyde resins and phenol-aldehyde resins incorporated.ALSO:Compositions comprising a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate in weight ratio 80:20 to 98:2, an alkyl acid phosphate and a saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having 5 to 20 carbon atoms and in which the carboxyl groups are separated by a chain of at least 3 carbon atoms, the molar ratio of phosphate to acid being 75:25 to 10:90 and the total phosphate and acid amounting to 0.5 to 1.0 mol. per mol. of glycidyl methacrylate in the copolymer, may be used as film-forming components of liquid coating compositions. The phosphate may be mono-butyl, mono-octyl, mono-octadecyl or mono-stearyl ortho-phosphates; dibutyl, dihexyl or didodecyl orthophosphates; or dibutyl pyro-phosphate. The acid may be adipic, pimilic, suberic, azelaic, sebacic, hendecanedioic, dodecanedioic, glutaric, brassylic, thapsic, eicosanedioic, a -butyl-a -ethyl glutaric or b -isopropylazelaic acids. The compositions may also comprise solvents, e.g. toluene, xylene, acetone, methylethyl ketone, methylisobutyl ketone, butyl ether, butyl acetate, glycol monoacetate and methoxyethyl acetate; pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, carbon black, silica, china clay, talc, metallic oxides, silicates, chromates, sulphides, sulphates and organic pigments; plasticizers, e.g. butylbenzyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, 2 - ethylhexylbenzyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, butylbenzyl phosphate and triphenyl phosphate; inhibitors; dispersing agents; flow - control agents; and other organic film - forming materials e.g. polymethyl methacrylate and other polymerized esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, nitrocellulose, oil-modified alkyd resins, alkylated amino-aldehyde resins and phenolaldehyde resins. The copolymer, phosphate and acid may be premixed in a solvent and heated, e.g. under reflux, and after mixing with the remaining components, the compositions applied, optionally over primers and undercoats, to metal, e.g. steel vehicle body panels, glass, ceramics, asbestos and wood, and air dried, force dried or baked.
