| abstract | 830,809. Wood-preserving compositions. ALLGEMEINE HOLZIMPRAGNIERUNG Dr. WOLMAN G.m.b.H. Aug. 2, 1957 [Nov. 1, 1956], No. 24522/57. Class 140. Wood - preserving compositions containing chromic acid or salts thereof as active constituents are made up in the form of adhesive pastes containing not more than 15%, preferably 5-12%, of water and including as adhesives, 0.05-2%, preferably 0.1-1.5%, of watersoluble commercial sizes containing polyacrylic acid or its sodium or ammonium salts, alone or in admixture with related acrylic polymers such as polymethacrylic acid or its sodium or ammonium salts, or with cellulose ethers, or carboxy celluloses, or ammonium or sodium salts thereof. The low water content is stated to obviate oxidation of the adhesive materials. The pastes may be spread directly on wood, and covered with a waterproof coating, may be applied to water-permeable or impermeable sheet material, for example butiminous felt, for preservative wrapping of standing poles &c., for example below the ground line or may be dried in warm air to a water content of 5% or less and made into shaped bodies, such as cylindrical cartridges which may be used to re-form pastes when required or may be inserted directly into bores in poles, sleepers, &c. Additional preservative agents, especially bifluorides, may be added. In an example 32 kg. of potassium bifluoride, 26 kg. of sodium arsenate and 42 kg. of sodium bichromate are ground together and added with agitation to a solution, in 10 kg. of water, of 0.3 kg. of a commercial water-soluble size containing polyacrylic acid and 0.2 kg. of a similar size containing the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose. |
