In a thermonuclear reactor comprising a vessel for containing a gas within which thermonuclear reactions are produced, the vessel is enveloped, at least in part, by a first blanket containing material fissile by fast neutrons, e.g. uranium 238, and by a second blanket containing lithium 6 which absorbs neutrons produced in the first blanket and produces tritium. The heat produced in the blankets may be extracted by conventional means and used to generate electricity. The effect of adding the uranium blanket is to multiply the power produced by the reactor and to make possible a net gain of power from a reactor which of itself does not produce a set gain.
