abstract | 1-Ethylindoline-2-thione is prepared by boiling N-ethyloxindole with phosphorus pentasulphide in pyridine. Other indoline-2-thiones containing N-alkyl, aralkyl or aryl substituents may be similarly prepared, reference being made to the N-methyl and N-phenyl compounds. The compounds are stated to be new.ALSO:Merocyanine dyes of the general formula <FORM:0829584/IV(c)/1> wherein Ra is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, Rb is alkyl, hydroxy alkyl or aryl, m and n are 0 or 1 and D completes a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus, are prepared by reacting a 2-thioindoline with a quaternary cyclammonium salt containing a thioether, thio-ethervinyl or acetanilidovinyl substitutent. Alternatively, dyes wherein n = 1 may be prepared by reacting the 2-thio-indoline with a quaternary cyclammonium salt containing a reactive methyl substituent in the presence of an alkyl orthoformic ester or alkyl trithio orthoformic ester. Examples are given of the preparation of dyes of the above formula wherein Ra is methyl, ethyl or phenyl, Rb is methyl or ethyl and D completes a benzthiazole, benzoxazole, 2- or 4-quinoline, pyridine, 1:3:3-trimethylindoline, 3:4 - dimethyl - thiazole or 3 - methyl - 4 - phenyl-thiazole nucleus. |
