titleOfInvention New polymerisation process
abstract A catalyst for polymerizing ethylene is obtained by grinding titanium or vanadium dichloride with aluminium chloride, bromide or iodide in the presence of a hydrocarbon liquid. The titanium dichloride used may be in the form of the complex TiCl2.2NaCl obtained from TiCl4 + Na, and titanium trichloride may also be present. Specification 794,785 is referred to.ALSO:Ethylene is polymerized using as catalyst the product obtained by grinding titanium or vanadium dichloride with aluminium chloride, bromide or iodide in the presence of a hydrocarbon liquid. The titanium dichloride used may be in the form of the complex TiCl2.2NaCl obtained from TiCl4 + Na, and in Example V titanium trichloride is also present. The polymerization may be effected in a hydrocarbon medium, e.g. petroleum ether, preferably purified by refluxing over alkali metal. The ethylene may be passed through the catalyst suspension or across the surface thereof. Catalyst may be subsequently removed by the use of materials such as water, steam, methanol, ethanol, butanol or methanolic hydrochloric acid. Specification 794,785 is referred to.
