abstract | Chlorobenzoyl chlorides containing more than two atoms of chlorine in the nucleus are prepared by chlorinating benzoyl chloride in the presence of a nuclear-chlorination catalyst until there is an increase in weight corresponding to more than twice, preferably at least 2.75 times, the theoretical for the introduction of one atom of chlorine while employing in the later stages of chlorination at least, a temperature exceeding 60 DEG C. Specified catalysts are ferric chloride, aluminium chloride, antimony trichloride and iodine. The products of chlorination or fractions separated therefrom by distillation, especially those consisting mainly of trichloro- and tetrachloro-compounds, may be hydrolysed to the free acids or salts thereof or may be reacted, e.g. with ammonia, amines, alcohols or phenols, to produce derivatives of the acids such as amides or esters. The trichloro- and tetrachlorobenzoic acids and their salts, esters and amides are of value a selective herbicides. |
