titleOfInvention Mixed anhydrides and their use as catalysts for the polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated compounds
abstract The invention comprises mixed anhydrides of hyponitrous acid and at least one organic monoester of carbonic acid, having the formula RO.CO.O-N=N-O.CO.OR1, where R and R1 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, aralkyl, allyl or aryl groups, which may be substituted, e.g. by halogen, alkoxy, cyano or ester radicals. The mixed anhydrides may contain further alkoxyformyl hyponitrite residues. The anhydrides may be prepared by reacting at 0 DEG C. or below a hyponitrous acid or a salt thereof, with at least one haloformic ester Hal-COOR; a solvent may be used, and a tertiary base may be present. Suitable hyponitrites are the Ag, Pb, Tl, Cu, K and NH4 salts. Specified radicals R and R1 are methyl, ethyl, &c., allyl, benzyl, cyclohexyl, tetrahydrofuryl, 3,5,5 - trimethylhexyl, 2 - ethylhexyl, r - tolyl, o - chlorophenyl, b - methoxyethyl, b - chloroethyl and 1-carbethoxypropanyl-2. The compounds of the invention may be used as polymerization catalysts (see Group IV (a)).ALSO:Ethylenically unsaturated compounds may be polymerized and copolymerized using as catalyst a mixed anhydride of hyponitrous acid and at least one organic monoester of carbonic acid, of the formula RO.CO.O-N = N-O.CO.OR1 where R and R1 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, aralkyl, allyl or aryl groups, which may be substituted, e.g. by halogen, alkoxy, cyano or ester radicals, or may contain further alkoxyformyl hyponitrite groups. Specified monomers are ethylene, styrene, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, isoprene, butadiene, acrylonitrile, fluoroethylenes, propylene, N-vinylphthalimide, methacrylamide, vinylidene chloride, chloroprene, fluoroprene, N-vinyl carbazole, N-vinyl pyrollidone, acenaphthene, maleic anhydride, indene, chlorinated styrenes and diallyl fumarate. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of an inert diluent and a chain-transfer agent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride.
