abstract The invention comprises 1,4-pregnadienes of the general formulae <FORM:0826396/IV (b)/1> and <FORM:0826396/IV (b)/2> wherein R represents an alkonoyl radical containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and the preparation of the 9,11-oxido compounds by treating the corresponding 9a -bromo-11b -hydroxy compounds with an alkali metal acetate or alkali metal alkoxide under anhydrous conditions, and the preparation of the 1,4,9(11)-triene compound by treating the required 16a ,21-di-alkanoyloxy-11b ,17a - dihydroxy - 1,4 - pregnadiene - 3,20 - dione with thionyl chloride or phosphorus oxychloride, e.g. at a temperature from - 15 DEG C. to 20 DEG C. The invention also includes a process for the preparation of 16a ,21-dialkanoyloxy-9a - bromo - 11b ,17a - dihydroxy - 1,4 - pregnadiene-3,20-dione in which the alkanoyl group contains from 1 to 6 carbon atoms by reacting the required 16a ,21 - dialkanoyloxy - 17a - hydroxy - 1,4,9(11) - pregnatriene - 3,20 - dione with an N-bromo-acid amide, e.g. at a temperature of from 0 DEG to 50 DEG C. Suitable N-bromoacid amides are N-bromo-acetamide, N-bromo-succinimide, and N-bromo-phthalimide. In the examples the preparations of the 16a ,21-diacetoxy derivatives of all the compounds referred to above are described. Specifications 824,351 and 826,395 are referred to.
