titleOfInvention Method of improving adherence of luminescent screens
abstract 825,935. Luminescent screens. THOMAS ELECTRONICS Inc. Feb. 7, 1956 [Feb. 10, 1955], No. 3762/56. Class 39(1). Process of forming a fluorescent coating on a solid surface, e.g. a C.R.T. face plate, comprises forming on the surface a substantially dry coating of a fluorescent material mixed with a water soluble alkali metal silicate, treating the coating with a solution of an alkali metal silicate insolubilising agent selected from the group consisting of acids, salts of strong acids and weak bases, and salts of polyvalent metals, and forming an organic film, e.g. of nitrocellulose, on the coating. A metal, e.g. aluminium, screen can be applied thereafter. The insolubilising agent can be applied by soaking the fluorescent screen with a small quanity of a solution of the agent in water or other volatile solvent, and drying. Alternatively the agent can be applied by adding a small quantity thereof directly to water applied to the screen to take a few drops of nitrocellulose solution. Suitable agents referred to are boric acid, phosphoric acid, acetic acid, ammonium nitrate, barium acetate and-with caution-hydrochloric acid. U.S.A. Specifications 2,298,968, 2,344,081, 2,619,472 and 2,678,888 are referred to.
