titleOfInvention | Composition having lubricating properties |
abstract | A lubricating composition comprises (i) a hydrocarbon lubricating oil, a silicone oil, a synthetic normally liquid oleaginous ester of a carboxylic acid, or any mixture of such materials, and (ii) a polymer (having a molecular weight not higher than 10,000) of a perfluorochloro-olefin, said polymer having halogen terminal atoms and having been prepared by telomerization, in the presence of a sulphuryl halide, of the perfluorochloro-olefin alone or in admixture with another halogen-containing olefin. Ingredient (i) may be mineral lubricating oil, a silicone (which may be halogen-bearing), an ester of a dicarboxylic acid such as adipic, suberic, azelaic, sebacic or phthalic acid or an ester of a monocarboxylic acid such as pelargonic acid. The esters may be esters of alkanols, cycloaliphatic alcohols or acetylenically unsaturated alcohols. Ingredient (ii) may be a telomer of trifluorochloroethylene or difluorodichloroethylene or a cotelomer thereof with such halogenated olefins as vinyl or vinylidene chloride or fluoride. The lubricating composition may be a liquid or a grease. In the latter case, it may contain thickeners (e.g. metal salts of organic acids and particularly of organic perfluorochlorocarboxylic acids, aryl-substituted ureas, or siliceous materials such as silica, metal silicates, clays, substituted ammonium derivatives thereof and estersils) and surface-active agents (e.g. amines produced by reacting ammonia or an amine with epichlorohydrin or with a neutral ester of metaphosphoric acid). Other materials which may be added to the lubricating composition are molybdenum sulphide, graphite and metal sulphonates. In the examples, the telomer employed is sulphuryl chloride-trifluorochloroethylene telomer and the ingredient (i) is dimethyl siloxane polymer, methyl phenyl siloxane polymer, mineral lubricating oil, di-(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate or adipate, di-sec.-amyl adipate, di-(3-methyl-heptyl) adipate or di-(methyl-cyclohexyl) adipate. In some cases, the composition is thickened to a grease with butylated estersil. One composition consisting of the telomer and dimethyl siloxane polymer is stated to be useful as a hydraulic fluid. Specification 781,525 is referred to.ALSO:A lubricating composition (see Group III) comprises a polymer (having a molecular weight not higher than 10,000) of a perfluorochloro-olefin, said polymer having halogen terminal atoms and having been prepared by telomerization, in the presence of a sulphuryl halide, of the perfluorochloro-olefin alone or in admixture with another halogen-containing olefin. The polymer may be a telomer of trifluorochloroethylene or difluorodichloroethylene or a cotelomer thereof with such halogenated olefins as vinyl or vinylidene chloride or fluoride. In an example, trifluorochloroethylene is telomerized in a closed vessel at about 95 DEG C., and in the presence of sulphuryl chloride and a carbon tetrachloride solution of benzoyl peroxide. The telomerization products are fractionated by distillation. Specification 781,525 is referred to. |
