titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to polymeric materials
abstract The invention comprises compounds of general formula I <FORM:0824308/IV (b)/1> where R1 is C2-C10 alkylene, and each R11 is hydrogen, an aryl, alkyl or aralkyl group, or a C2-C10 hydroxyalkyl group. When R11 is other than hydroxyalkyl the compounds may be prepared by reacting one molar proportion of an alkylene diamine with two molar proportions of a p-carbalkoxy benzoyl halide, e.g. below 50 DEG C. The diamine may be used in the free form or in the form of a salt such as the hydrochloride. Mixtures may be prepared by employing two or more diamines. Where R11 is an hydroxyalkyl group the compound may be prepared by reacting a compound of formula I, where R11 is alkyl, with a C2-C10 glycol. Examples are given.ALSO:The invention comprises a process for the preparation of polymers by condensing together a mixture of compounds, containing at least one compound of general formula (I) <FORM:0824308/IV (a)/1> where R11 is hydrogen, aryl, alkyl or aralkyl group, and at least one compound of formula HO-R-OH where R is C2-C10 alkylene or an ester thereof and R1 is a C2-C10 alkylene group. Other components specified in the mixture are C6-C14 dicarboxylic acids, their esters, e.g. their dialkyl or diphenyl esters, chlorides or amides, e.g. terephthalic, isophthalic, or bis-sulphonyl p-dibenzoic or adipic, sebacic or azelaic acid which together with the monomers of formula (I), form copolymers. Alterntively the polymers prepared by the process of the invention may consist wholly of regular units of the monomer. The process of the invention is carried out by heating the reaction mixture in the presence of an ester interchange catalyst whereby glycol diesters of the dicarboxylic compounds are formed in the initial stage, by continued heating under pressure, glycol is evolved and the glycol diesters undergo condensation polymerization. The glycols used can be straight or branched chain glycols, or mixtures of glycols. The polymers may be made into fibres, films, sheets or tubes.
