titleOfInvention | Resin compositions capable of being hardened and a process of preparing same |
abstract | A resinous composition comprises a liquid resin obtained by condensing an aldehyde and a mononuclear monohydric phenol, furfuryl alcohol resin in an amount between 10 and 75% and a phosphoric acid ester and/or a chlorhydrin and/or a chlorinated aldehyde and/or epichlorhydrin and/or a chlorine containing phenoxy compound as an additive in amount between 1 and 30%. The molar ratio of aldehyde to phenol is preferably between 1 : 1 and 1.8 : 1 although 2 : 1 may also be used. Furfural may also be present in amount from 1 to 30%, the total of additive and furfural not exceeding 40% based on the aldehyde resin used. Specified additives are trimethyl phosphate, triethyl phosphate, 1 : 2 or 1 : 3- dichloropropanol, monochloropropanol, glycol chlorhydrin, epichlorhydrin, dichloro-t-isobutanol, chloral hydrate, beta-di-chloropropionaldehyde hydrate and chlorobenzaldehyde. Known hardening agents, e.g. 1 : 5-naphthalene - disulphonic acid, p - toluene - sulphonic acid, beta-naphthalene sulphochloride, p - toluene - sulphochloride, maleic anhydride, hydrogen chloride, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, benzotrichloride and lead oxide and fillers such as silicon, silicon carbide, graphite, finely pulverized coke, silicon dioxide, quartz, titanium dioxide, barium sulphate, hardened phenol aldehyde resins, polytetrafluoroethylene, polytrifluorochloroethylene and partially acetalized polyvinyl alcohol may also be present. |
