titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to thermosetting resinous condensation products
abstract A thermosetting resinous condensation product containing a methylol or etherified methylol group alone or together with a material containing an epoxide ring is cured by mixing with (a) boron oxide, a boric acid or a boric acid ester or a mixture thereof, and (b) an organic compound containing at least two groups selected from >C(OH), -CO- and COOH, said groups being separated by not more than two carbon atoms or a mixture of such compounds, or (c) a product obtained by reacting at least one compound (a) and at least one compound (b). Specified thermosetting resins are the reaction products of phenol, substituted monohydric phenols containing three unsubstituted position o- and pto the phenol hydroxyl group, urea, thiourea, guanidine, melamine, ethers of melamine and ammeline with formaldehyde or acetaldehyde and the reaction products of polyphenylol compounds or phenol-aldehyde resins with epihalohydrins. Specified boric acid esters are triethyl, triamyl, triallyl and triphenyl borate. Specified organic compounds are glycols and polyhydric alcohols, a - and b -hydroxy carboxylic, a - and b -hydroxy aldehydes and ketones, a -ketocarboxylic acids and dicarboxylic acids of which many are specified, examples being ethylene glycol, glycerol, glucose, glycollic acid, pyruvic acid, succinic acid and acetyl acetone. Fibrous fillers, pigments, dyestuffs and plasticizers may be mixed with solutions of the reactants. In the Examples (I), (III), (IV), (V), (XII) and (XIII), a phenol-formaldehyde resol is cured with (I) o-boric acid and glycerol, (III) boric acid and maleic acid, (IV) boric acid and oxalic acid, (V) (a) triamyl borate and glycerine, (b) borax and glycerine, (c) boric acid and glyoxal; (XII) (c) boric acid and salicylic acid, (e) boric acid and mandelic acid, (g) boric acid and phthalic acid; and (XIII) (a) boric acid and 1,3-butanediol, (b) boric acid and 2,5-pentane-diol; in Example (II), a urea-formaldehyde resin is cured with boric acid and lactic acid; (X) a melamine-formaldehyde resin is cured with o-boric acid and glyconic acid, whilst in Example (VI) glass fabrics impregnated with a mixture of the phenolic resin of Example (I), o-boric acid and lactic acid are laminated between glass; (VII) the resin catalyst mixture of Example (VI) is used to impregnate asbestos string and make a tube; (VIII) the phenolic resol of Example (I) amyl borate and glycerine are mixed and moulded; (IX) powdered graphite, a phenol-formaldehyde resin, boron oxide and glycerine and mixed and moulded, and in Example (XI) a liquid epoxy resin made from diphenylol propane and epichlorhydrin and a phenol-formaldehyde condensate are mixed and cured with the glycerol ester of o-boric acid.
