titleOfInvention | Manufacture of low molecular weight unsaturated hydrocarbons |
abstract | Unsaturated aliphatic compounds, especially ethylene and acetylene, are formed by the pyrrolysis of aliphatic hydrocarbons, containing at least two carbon atoms, by contacting with a hot hydrogen-containing combustion gas from which oxygen atoms and molecules formed by dissociation are removed by recombination by introduction of a cooler secondary gas, preferably containing the same chemical compounds as the combustion gas. The starting hydrocarbon may be ethane, propane, butane, ethylene, propylene, butylenes, hexanes, heptanes, octanes, decanes, cycloaliphatic compounds and monounsaturated hydrocarbons or commercial mixtures of gases or liquids such as petroleum distillates, benzine fractions, topped oils, diesel oils and crude oils containing minor amounts of aromatic hydrocarbons. Solids containing up to 30 carbon atoms per molecule can be used. The combustion gas may be formed from coal dust, oils, gaseous hydrocarbons, hydrogen or carbon monoxide. Hydrogen should be added if not already present. The secondary gas may be added in amounts of 1-80% by weight of the total combustion + secondary gas, the temperature not being reduced below 700 DEG C. Contact times may be 10-1 to 10-4 second. |
