titleOfInvention | Process for producing cellular structure plasticized vinyl resins |
abstract | Foamed materials are prepared by processes which comprise dispersing in a vinyl chloride polymer plastisol at a temperature below the gelatinization point and under a pressure of up to 100 p.s.i.g. a foaming agent which immediately prior to dispersion is in the gaseous state, the foaming agent comprising a polyhalogenated saturated hydrocarbon having an atmospheric boiling point between - 42 DEG and + 80 DEG F., producing a foam by the expansion of the mixture by means of a reduction of pressure, heating the foam to effect solvation of the resin in the plasticizer and cooling the foam to form a foamed material of solid cellular structure. Specified polymers are polyvinyl chloride, and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, diethyl maleate and vinylidene chloride. Specified plasticizers are tricresyl phosphate, dioctyl phosphate, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, n-butyl benzyl phthalate and mixtures thereof. The foaming agent may be monochlorodifluoromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane, 1,2-dichloro-1,1,2,2 - tetrafluoroethane, 1,1,1 - trichloro-2,2,2 - trifluoroethane, dichloromonofluoromethane, 1,2 - difluoroethane, 1,1 - dichloroethane, 1,1,1 - trichloroethane and trichloromonofluoromethane. The plastisols may contain metal soaps, e.g. aluminium stearate and cadmium and barium soaps, pigments, fillers and stabilizers. The products may be used in seat cushions and mattresses. Specifications 737,367 and 819,164 are referred to. |
