titleOfInvention Process for the softening of skins and hides
abstract 818,132. Mercaptoalkanesulphonic acid softening agents. BOEHME FETTCHEMIE G.m.b.H. Jan. 8. 1958 [Jan. 22, 1957], No. 686/58. Class 76. Skins and hides are softened by soaking in a liquor containing a mercapto-alkanesulphonic acid which contains 2-4 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, or salt thereof. Specified acids are 2-mercaptoethanesulphonic acid, 1,3-mercaptopropanesulphonic acid, 1,3-mercaptobutanesulphonic acid, 1,4-mereaptobutanesulphonic acid. Specified salts are the alkali metal, calcium or ammonium salts, and salts with organic bases such as dimethylamine, triethanolamine and diethanolamine. The soak liquor contains 0.05-1.0 g. per 1. of mercaptoalkanesulphonic acid or salt, and 0.5-1.0 g. per 1. of a non-ionic or anionic wetting agent such as alkyl sulphonate or alkylbenzene sulphonate.
