abstract | 817,891. Fabrics coated with polyester compositions. WINTERBOTTOM BOOK CLOTH CO. Ltd. Feb. 24, 1956 [Nov. 25, 1954], No. 34135/54. Class 140. A flexible air impermeable coated fabric comprises a single-ply or sheet of a textile fabric coated and impregnated with a polyester composition, as defined, which is subsequently cured. The term " textile fabric " includes fabrics made from natural and synthetic yarns and filaments, fabrics formed from glass yarns or filaments and pulp or paper. " Polyester compositions " are defined in the Specification as polymerizable liquids which on curing will form an addition polymer and which are capable of setting to a clear transparent sheet comprising essentially a polyester proper, i.e. a condensation product of a dibasic acid and a dihydric alcohol, one of which at least is unsaturated, and a monomeric vinyl compound which is preferably an ester, e.g. ethyl acrylate, methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate or; acrylonitrile or styrene. The coated fabrics of the invention are suitable for use as tracing cloths after the further application of a layer which is sensitive to pencil and/or ink markings, e.g. a nitrocellulose or resinous coating containing an abrasive, or as a reproduction cloth if the further layer contains a light-sensitive composition, e.g. gelatine containing a silver halide. Or the fabrics are useful as coverings, curtains, or diaphragms for pumps. The flexibility and elasticity of the coated fabric may be adjusted by the choice of components from which the polyester proper is made. Thus saturated dicarboxylic acids may be used in conjunction. with maleic acid so that the distance between successive unsaturated linkages in the polyester molecule is increased producing greater elasticity of the product. Also, dihydric alcohols with chain, lengths between the hydroxyl groups greater than that in ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol may be used to produce greater elasticity. The fabric base is coated with the polyester composition and a temporary laminate formed by placing it between two impervous sheets of a material such as " Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark). This assembly is then passed through a heated oven whereby the coated fabric is cured and then the impervious sheets are stripped off Specification 767,502 is referred to. |
