titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to polyvinylbutyral adhesives |
abstract | An adhesive comprises a polyvinylbutyral, ammonium chromate and/or bichromate as hardener therefor and a copper salt as activator. The ammonium salt may be used in amount of 20 to 60 per cent and the copper salt may be used in amount of 1 to 6 per cent, both by weight of the polyvinylbutyral. To the adhesive may be added a thermo-hardening one- or two-stage phenol-aldehyde condensate, e.g. the condensate of phenol, cresol, xylenol or resorcinol with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde or butyraldehyde; solvents, e.g. ethanol; colouring substances; and fillers, e.g. lithopone and marble powder. In examples the adhesives consist of (i) polyvinylbutyral mixed with 10 per cent (by weight) of ammonium bichromate and 2 per cent of copper sulphate; (ii) 50 g. of a cresol-formaldehyde-novolak, 7 g. hexamethylene-tetramine, 2 g. polyvinylbutyral, 1 g. ammonium bichromate and 0.2 g. copper sulphate, with ethanol as solvent. Other copper salts specified are the nitrate and chloride. |
