titleOfInvention Veterinary compositions containing antibiotics
abstract Veterinary compositions which are non-aqueous creams or pastes suitable for intramammary injection, comprise a suspension of penicillin and/or streptomycin in admixture with a suitable dispersing agent and not less than 30 per cent by weight of a suitable mineral oil. The penicillin may be a natural penicillin, e.g. penicillin G, or a synthetic penicillin, e.g. penicillin V, optionally in the form of a salt thereof, e.g. the sodium, calcium, potassium or procaine salt. The streptomycin may be present as such or as dihydrostreptomycin, optionally in the form of a salt thereof, e.g. sulphate or hydrochloride, or as a complex thereof, e.g. with calcium chloride. The mineral oil is defined as being mixtures of hydrocarbon oils, e.g. liquid and light liquid paraffin or petroleum jellies, which may be thickened by the addition of white or yellow soft paraffins, or aluminium palmitate. The dispersing agent is defined as having a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of between 9.5 and 10.5 and may be a partial ester of the common fatty acids, e.g. lauric, palmitic, stearic or oleic acid, and hexital anhydrides, e.g. hexitans or hexides derived from sorbitol, the corresponding condensation product of these partial esters with ethylene oxide, or mixtures thereof, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate, tristearate, mono-oleate, pentalaurate, hexa-oleate, polyoxyethylene lauryl alcohol, polyoxyethylene cetyl alcohol, or polyoxyethylene sorbitol laurate, or mixtures thereof. The dispersing agent may be present between 0.5 and 10 per cent by weight of the composition.
