titleOfInvention Improvements relating to sheets of thermoplastic material having a porous or cellular structure
abstract A heat insulating, porous or cellular material comprises randomly arranged pieces of thermoplastic film welded together to form a sheet of irregular surface. A thermoplastic film may be welded to one surface of the sheet. The small pieces of film are randomly distributed, e.g. on a rigid perforated or porous horizontal support, to form a layer many times the thickness of the pieces, the layer is heated by radiant heat until the pieces are soft and adhesive, and by suddenly causing an air stream to pass through the heated layer, e.g. by applying suction to the rear of the perforated support, the pieces are welded together. A continuous film may be sucked down to become welded on to the upper surface of the sheet during or subsequent to formation of the sheet. The sheet may be formed continuously by using a travelling perforated or porous belt, e.g. of wire gauze, to carry the layer of pieces of film first under a heater and later over a vacuum box. The thermoplastic material of the film may be a plasticized cellulose ester or ether such as the acetate, propionate, butyrate, acetate-propionate, acetate-butyrate, or ethyl cellulose, or a synthetic resin such as polystyrene, a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, or methacrylonitrile, polythene, polyhexamethylene adipamide, or polyethylene terephthalate. The pieces of thermoplastic film may be mixed with fibres such as cotton, regenerated cellulose, or cellulose acetate spinning waste, thermoplastic material in flake form, small fragments of fabric of thermoplastic material, or small pieces of regenerated cellulose foil. To assist adhesion, the material may be wetted with a plasticiser, solvent, potential solvent, or a liquid having a softening effect at the vacuum forming temperature, e.g. water or aqueous solutions of high boiling solvents or plasticizers such as diethylene glycol diacetate or triacetin; alternatively a thermoplastic adhesive such as polyvinyl acetate may be used. The product may simulate snow or ice for Christmas decorations, or may be made from coloured pieces of film. Specification 758,036, [Group XVI], is referred to.
