titleOfInvention | Improvements in liquid-vapour barrier compositions and articles made therefrom |
abstract | A composition consists of at least one aromatic fuel insoluble long-chain linear superpolyamide of which the amide groups are hydrocarbon groups containing at least 2 carbon atoms, and at least one highly polar aromatic compound of the formula (R)x-[-Ar-]-(P)y, where Ar is an aromatic nucleus, R is alkoxy, alkyl, halogen or hydrogen, x is 4 to 0, P is -OH, -COOH, -COOR2, -OCOH, or OCOR2, where R2 is alkyl and y is 2 to 6, the ratio of said superpolyamide to said highly polar aromatic compound being 85:15 to 65:35 parts by weight. Many polyamides which may be simple or co-polyamides are specified, examples being polyhexamethylene adipamide, poly-6-aminocaproic acid and polyamides in which a minor proportion of the amido hydrogen atoms are replaced by alkoxyalkyl radicals, e.g. those prepared by treating a linear superpolyamide with formaldehyde and an alcohol in the presence of an oxygen containing acid. Specified polar aromatic compounds are resorcinol, hydroquinone, phloroglucinol, 1,2,3,5-benzenetetrol, pentahydroxybenzene, hexahydroxybenzene, catechol, 3-methylpyrocatechol, 1-butyl catechol, 4-ethyl resorcinol, 5-methoxy resorcinol, 2-methyl resorcinol, pyrogallol, 5-methyl pyrogallol, salicyclic acid, phthalic acid, 6-chlorophthalic acid, acetyl salicylic acid and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthoic acid. The compositions are used in the manufacture of liquid-vapour barriers, for the preparation of which they are dissolved in solvents, e.g. in methanol, ethanol, butanol, isopropanol, dimethyl formamide, ethanol formamide, ethylene chlorohydrin, chlorinated hydrocarbons and ethanol-water mixtures. In the examples, superpolyamides are dissolved in ethanol together with resorcinol, acetyl salicylic acid, t-butyl catachol, catechol, hydroquinone, phthalic acid, pyrogallol, salicylic acid or resorcinol and formalin. The compositions may be used as liquid-vapour barriers in the manufacture of fuel tanks, lines and hoses, and valves and fittings on fuel containers. |
