titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to wax compositions
abstract The colour stability of paraffin wax is improved by adding 0.025 to 5 per cent by weight of a ketone of the general formula <FORM:0814313/III/1> wherein R1 is an aryl group, C are straight chain carbon atoms, x is 0 to 3 and R2 is an aryl or alkyl group. R1 may be aryl, substituted aryl or condensed aryl such as naphthalene, indene or anthracene. It is preferred to use ketones which are soluble in molten wax and which crystallize with the wax when cooled to room temperature. Liquid ketones may be used but it is preferred to use those which are solid at room temperatures, e.g. solid diaryl ketones. Colour stability is imparted whether the wax is solid, or in solution, or suspended in water as an emulsion or paste. Preferred ketones are benzophenone, phenyl p-tolyl ketone, phenyl xylyl ketone, 1,6-phenyl hexanone-3, p-(1-phenyl decene-5) acetophenone, phenyl undecyl ketone, benzoyl acetone, xanthone, benzal acetone, benzal acetophenone and methoxy benzophenone. Specification 777,811 is referred to.
