titleOfInvention Hardenable compositions comprising epoxy resins, and a process for curing these compositions
abstract Compositions which together with fillers, pigments, dyes &c may be ground to give moulding powders consist of an epoxy resin having an epoxy equivalent of from 0.1-0.8, a novolak resin obtained by condensation of an aldehyde and an alkylated or non-alkylated phenol and having an average number of phenolic hydroxyl groups per mol. of at least 2, and an organic nitrogen compound having the structural group <FORM:0813972/IV (a)/1> e.g. dicyandiamide, guanidine or melamine. Proportions of 20-300 parts novolac resin, 100 parts epoxy resin and 0.1-8 parts nitrogen compounds are suitable. The compositions are hardened by heating to 80-250 DEG C. but stable precondensates may be obtained by cooling to below 50 DEG C. before hardening starts. In one example a composition consisting of 100 parts epoxy resin, 70 parts novolak resin and 1 part dicyandiamide is hardened by heating at 140-180 DEG C. and from 13.2 to 8.3 hours. Specifications 636,696, 666,299 and U.S.A. Specification 2,521,911 are referred to.
