titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the recovery of ruthenium
abstract Ruthenium isotopes such as Ru103 and Ru106 are recovered from residual aqueous solutions which have resulted from the dissolution of neutron-irradiated uranium in nitric acid and removal therefrom of the uranium by adjusting the pH of such residual solutions to 1 to 3, oxidizing the contained ruthenium isotopes to the octavalent state and extracting them by means of liquid halogen-substituted paraffin immiscible with the aqueous solution. Preferred halogen substituted paraffins are tetrachlorethane and carbon tetrachloride or a mixture thereof. Initial pH adjustment may be effected by alkali metal hydroxide or ammonia and if desired such addition may be effected to a point where uranium begins to precipitate, final adjustment being made by the addition of nitric acid. The resulting solution may be washed with tetrachlorethane or other liquid halogen-substituted paraffin to remove any organic substance which may remain from the uranium extraction and the washed aqueous solution is then treated for the oxidation of the contained ruthenium to the octavalent state, preferably by means of an aqueous solution of ammonium ceric nitrate. After oxidation the solution is extracted with, for example, tetrachlorethane and after separation, the organic phase is preferably washed with an ammonium ceric nitrate solution to remove contaminants taken up. The organic phase is then acidulated with, for example, aqueous normal hydrochloric acid or nitric or sulphuric acids, if desired in the presence of reducing agents such as formaldehyde or sulphur dioxide, whereby the ruthenium passes to the aqueous phase as the chloride.
