titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to removal of ruthenium from solutions of metal nitratesin organic solvents |
abstract | The ruthenium content of a solution of a metal nitrate in an organic solvent is reduced by contacting the solution at an elevated temperature, e.g. 40-60 DEG C., with an aqueous stripping solution containing a nitrate. The process is especially applicable to the treatment of an organic solution of uranyl nitrate obtained from neutron irradiated uranium. The aqueous stripping solution may contain ammonium nitrate, a reducing agent, e.g. ferrous sulphamate, and a small amount of nitric acid. The uranium may be returned to aqueous solution by treating the organic extract with water or dilute nitric acid. |
