titleOfInvention | Process and apparatus for the manufacture of sulphoalkylesters of fatty acids |
abstract | <PICT:0811699/IV (b)/1> Fatty acid sulphoethylesters are made by mixing together sodiumisethionate with a fatty acid halide under liquid conditions, and delivering the mixture to a heated surface swept by rapidly moving members which simultaneously produce a thin film of said mixture and violent turbulence in said mixture, at an accurately controlled temperature for a period of time until the reaction is substantially complete. This may be done by carrying the reaction mixture over a surface by the combined effect of gravity and the motion of said members at such a speed as to permit complete reaction during the passage through a heated cylinder. Suitable apparatus comprises a reactor 1 having a steam jacket 2 for control of temperature and a rotor member 8 with blades 11. An inlet 14 for the reaction mixture is provided and material is discharged from the outlet 4 in solid form. A detailed example describes the reaction of sodium isethionate with coconut fatty acid chloride; acetyl chloride, stearic acid chloride and oleic acid chloride are other specified fatty acid halides. U.S.A. Specification 2,861,090 is referred to. |
