titleOfInvention | Copolymers of trifluoroethyl vinyl ether and chloro-olefins |
abstract | Copolymers are made from 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl vinyl ether and a chloro-olefin, e.g. vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, chloroprene or chloroisoprene. The copolymerization may be carried out by bulk, solution, suspension or emulsion methods and as a third monomer a bifunctional compound may be present in the reaction mixture, e.g. vinyl acrylate, allyl methacrylate, diallyl maleate, diallyl benzene phosphonate, triallyl cyanurate, trimethallyl phosphite or their fluorine derivatives. The polymerization catalyst may be azo-bis-isobutyronitrile, 1 - azo - bis - 1 - phenylethylene; sodium, potassium, calcium, barium or ammonium persulphates; acetyl, benzoyl, benzoyl acetyl, lauroyl, propionyl, diethyl, dipropyl, hydrogen or alkaline earth peroxides or t-butyl hydroperoxide. In polymerization in aqueous media surface-active agents may be present, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate, the sodium salt of dioctyl succinate sulphonic acid or dodecyl benzene sulphonate or hydrophilic colloids such as gum arabic, completely or partially hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol, gelatine, gum tragacanth, hydroxyethyl or carboxymethyl cellulose. In conjunction with the catalyst an activator may be used, e.g. sodium bisulphite or hydrosulphite, ferrous compounds, sodium or zinc formaldehyde sulphoxylates, triethanolamine, dimethyl aniline, or triethylene tetramine. The polymerization may be conducted under acidic conditions, e.g. in the presence of formic acid, the vinyl ether may be added incrementally or continuously and unreacted vinyl ether may be recovered. The copolymers may be cured, e.g. by sulphur, sulphur-containing compounds, or magnesium or zinc oxides and may be compounded with plasticizers, fillers, stabilizers, pigments or other resins and may be made into flexible and resistant coatings, films, tubes or gaskets. Specification 742,083 is referred to. |
