abstract | Polystyrene derivatives of molecular weight not more than 3,100 with an average of up to 1.0 substituents of the type -CH2OR for each aromatic nucleus, where R represents an hydrogen atom or an hydrocarbon or acyl radical which may be further substituted, may be made by reacting a chloromethylated polystyrene with an alkali metal derivative, e.g. sodium, potassium or lithium, of a compound ROH where R is a hydrocarbon or acyl radical, as defined above, or in the case where R is hydrogen by hydrolysing the acyl product in the presence of alkali and preferably an organic solvent. The compound ROH may be methanol, ethanol, butanol, phenol, ethylene glycol monoacetate, methyl salicylate, acetic acid, stearic acid, salicylaldehyde, salicylamide, acetylaminophenol, methyl hydrogen terephthalate, salicyclic acid or lactic acid. The chloromethylated polystyrenes may be obtained by reacting polystyrene with chloromethyl methyl ether as described in Specification 810,026. The reaction with the alkali metal derivative which may be made in situ may be effected up to 140 DEG C. in the presence of an inert solvent such as dimethyl formamide, methyl ethyl ketone, acetone or xylene. In a modification derivatives with an acyl radical of at least 9 carbon atoms, e.g. those derived from glyceride oil fatty acids, are made from the corresponding derivatives with an acyl radical of less than 4 carbon atoms by an ester-interchange process. Polystyrene derivatives specified are butoxy-, phenoxy-, carbomethoxyphenoxy, carboxyphenoxy-, aldehydophenoxy-, acetoxyethoxy-, hydroxyethoxy-, acetoxy-, acetylaminophenoxy-, carbamidophenoxy- and hydroxy-methylpolystyrene and the esters of hydroxymethyl polystyrene with palmitic, stearic, methyl terephthalic and salicylic acids and the acids derived from castor and linseed oils. Solutions of the derivatives may be used as coating compositions for the production of water-resistant films, e.g. dissolved in xylene with cobalt naphthenate driers. |
