titleOfInvention | A continuous process for preparing meta di-isopropylbenzene |
abstract | Meta-di-isopropylbenzene is prepared in a continuous process by alkylating benzene or cumene or a mixture thereof, isomerizing the fraction containing ortho- and meta-diisopropyl benzene, and separating by distillation a fraction consisting of ortho- and meta-diisopropylbenzenes from the isomerization product. A fraction containing more than 2 isopropyl groups may be removed from the alkylation product and subjected to transalkylation with benzene or cumene or mixtures thereof; the ortho- and meta-diisopropylbenzene fraction from the product may be combined with the similar fraction from the isomerizer. The mixture of ortho- and metadiisopropylbenzenes may also be transalkylated, either alone or together with the higher alkylated products. Alkylation agents specified are isopropyl halides such as isopropyl chloride, isopropyl alcohol, propane or a propene-propane mixture containing 60 per cent propene. Alkylation catalysts referred to are Friedel-Crafts catalysts, e.g. AlCl3, concentrated H2SO4, HF or a cracking catalyst such as a silicate which may consist mainly of SiO2 and also contain oxides of Al, Zr, Mg, Ca, Na, K, H, C and S in chemically bound form; or mixtures of Al2O3 and SiO2. Specifications 737,439, 749,186, 749,187, 770,224 and 772,635 are referred to. |
