titleOfInvention Polymerisable compositions
abstract A polymerizable composition comprises a copolymer of methyl methacrylate with from 1 to 15 per cent by weight of an ethenoid polymerizable epoxy compound such as glycidyl acrylate, methacrylate or crotonate or glycidyl allyl ether, a polymeric plasticizer, a cross-linking agent for the epoxy compound and a solvent. The plasticizer is preferably a liquid mixed polyester formed by the condensation of a glycol, an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and an aromatic monocarboxylic acid and optionally also an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, or mixtures thereof, as described in Specification 775,764, the plasticizer used in the examples being a benzoic acid modified polypropylene adipate. The cross-linking agent may be a catalyst such as 2:4:6-tri-(dimethylaminoethyl) phenol, the condensation product of phenylbiguanide with tetramethylenepentamine, diethylenetriamine, 2:5-di-(dimethylaminomethyl) quinoline, N:N-dimethylcyclohexylamine, N:N - dimethylbenzylamine, N:N:N1:N1-tetramethylhexamethylenediamine, 2 - (dimethylaminomethyl) cyclohexanone, phenyl 2 - (dimethylamino) ethyl ketone, di - [2 - (diethylamino) ethyl) adipate, N - ethylhexamethyleneimine, hexamethylene imine, N-methylbenzylamine, benzyl trimethylammonium hydroxide or acetate, and the piperidine salt of pentamethylenedithiocarbamic acid, or may be a polyfunctional compound such as diethylene triamine, hexamethylene diamine, decamethylene diamine, triglycol diamine, bis - hexamethylene diamine, 1.6 - diamino - 6 - methylheptane, bis - (4 - hydroxy phenyl) dimethyl methane, bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) methyl ethyl methane, b :b -bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-d -methyl pentane, adipic acid and polyamides obtained from dimerized acids condensed with polyamines. The solvent may be xylene, butanol, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate or mixtures thereof. The compositions may be used for coating surfaces and are crosslinked by heating. Pigments such as titanium dioxide and iron oxide may be incorporated.
