titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to activation of aluminium
abstract Aluminium to be used in the preparation of organic or organometallic compounds is activated by heating in the presence of a compound RnM where R is an alkyl or aryl radical, M is a metal other than aluminium and n is a whole number to a temperature of at least 150 DEG C. and below the ultimate decomposition temperature of said compound. Preferably the activation may take place in the presence of hydrogen. An inert solvent may also be used such as pentane, cyclopentane, hexane, cyclohexane, heptane, cycloheptane, octane, nonane, decane or decahydronaphthalene. It is also preferred that the metal is above hydrogen in the electrochemical series. Specified activators include pentamethyl-, triethyl- and trimethyl-antimony; di-n-butyl-, diethyl-, dimethyl- and dipropyl-beryllium; methyl-, tri-ethyl-, tri-methyl- and triphenyl-bismuthine; di-isoamyl-, dibutyl-, di-isobutyl-, di-ethyl- and dimethylcadmium; triethyl- and trimethyl-gallium; tetra-methyl-, tetra-ethyl-, tetra-phenyl- and tri-ethyl-lead; diethyl zinc; tetra phenyl germanium; and di-ethyl-di-iso-amyl-, diethyl-di-isobutyl-, diethyl-, dimethyl-di-isobutyl-, dimethyl-diethyl-, di-p-tolyl-, di-p-xylyl-, ethyl-n - propyl - di - isoamyl -, tetra - isoamyl-, tetrabenzyl -, tetra - isobutyl -, tetracyclohexyl -, tetraethyl -, tetramethyl -, tetrapropyl -, tetra - o - tolyl -, tetra - m - tolyl -, tetrap - tolyl -, tetra - p - xylyl -, tetra - m - xylyl-, tri - isobutyl - iso - amyl -, tri - isobutyl - ethyl-, triethyl - isoamyl -, triethyl - isobutyl -, triethyl - phenyl -, triethyl - n - propyl -, triethyl-, trimethyl - ethyl -, trimethyl -, triphenylbenzyl -, triphenylethyl - and triphenyl methyltin. The aluminium is preferably comminuted by grinding, milling, drilling or other operation. The heating is preferably for a period of at least 1/2 hour, using a minimum of 5-10 per cent of activator based on the aluminium. The activated aluminium may be isolated and stored in nitrogen or oxygen-free hexane, or more conveniently it may be reacted without being isolated with an olefin and hydrogen to give an aluminium alkyl or an alkyl aluminium hydride. It may also be reacted with carbon tetrachloride to give hexachlorethane. In an example aluminium chips are heated with di-n-butylberyllium in the presence of hydrogen for 3 hours at 190 DEG C. After activation, isobutylene and hydrogen are added to produce tri-isobutylaluminium.
