abstract <PICT:0808176/III/1> A liquid to be crystallized is fed by a line 7 to a pumping chamber 2 containing an impeller 5 surrounded by a septum 6, liquid in the septum 6 being driven by the impeller 5 down limbs 8a of U-tubes surrounded by coolant in a chamber 3 and out through limbs 8b, the exit orifices of the U-tubes being outside the septum 6. The U-tubes are cooled by a coolant, such as liquid ethylene or ethone, introduced by a line 9 and leaving in gaseous form by a line 10. The liquid introduced by line 7 preferably is precooled to just above the initial crystallization temperature and crystals form in chamber 2 by contact with cooled slurry, so that a liquid slurry is passed through the U-tubes, the impeller 5 being operated to cause turbulent flow in the U-tubes. Slurry is taken off from chamber 2 by overflowing a baffle 11, and is conveyed by a line 12 to a tank 13 for feeding to centrifuges. Paraxylene may be separated from a mixture of xylenes in the apparatus.
