titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to adhesives or cements and to a process for the production thereof
abstract An adhesive or plastic composition, particularly suitable for sticking coverings on floors and walls, is made by mixing in water a ligniniferous material (excluding wood), a hexavalent chromium compound, a water-combining substance and/or a water-retaining substance. The ligniniferous material may be lignin, dioxane lignin, or sulphite waste liquor. The chromium compound may be sodium, potassium, or ammonium dichromate. The water-combining substance may be a plaster containing calcium sulphate hemi-hydrate. The water-retaining substance may be kaolin, binding clay, talc, or exfoliated vermiculite. Sand or slow-setting plaster may be included. A softener such as glycerine, sorbitol, glycol, triglycol, polyethylene oxide, or an aqueous emulsion of a mineral oil, soft paraffin, asphalt, tar, ceresin, or a mixture of ceresin and resin, is, preferably, included. The softener may be, or may include, magnesium and/or calcium chloride. Polyethylene oxide may be mixed with an aqueous solution of the chromium compound, e.g. sodium chromate, and then mixed with the other powdered ingredients. Alternatively, polyethylene oxide or sorbitol may be mixed with the other dry ingredients. The pH of the adhesive or plastic composition may be brought below 6 by adding an acid such as sulphuric or an acid salt such as aluminium sulphate. The adhesive or plastic composition may comprise the following ingredients in parts by weight: dry lignosulphites from sulphite waste liquor 10, plaster 10-12, kaolin or windsifted binding clay 8-10, sodium dichromate 2-2,2, glycerine 3-4, water 4-5.
