titleOfInvention Acyl derivatives of 4, 6-dihydroxy-isophthalic acid
abstract The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0807326/IV (b)/1> where of R and R1, one is a lower acyl group and the other a hydrogen atom or the same or different lower acyl group ("lower" meaning 1-3 carbon atoms in the group), together with the salts of the said compounds, and the preparation thereof by acylation of 4 : 6-dihydroxyisophthalic acid or (for monoacyl compounds only) partial hydrolysis of di-acyl compounds. Suitable acylating agents are acid anhydrides, acid chlorides or other reactive acid derivatives of aliphatic acids containing 1-3 carbon atoms, or ketene. Mono- or di-acyl compounds are formed depending on the quantities of acylating agents used, and di-acyl compounds wherein R and R1 are different, are prepared in a step-wise reaction. Examples are given of the preparation of 4 : 6-diacetoxy- and 4-acetoxy-6-hydroxy-isophthalic acids by acylation with acetic anhydride, and of the preparation of the calcium salt of 4 : 6-diacetoxy-isophthalic acid by neutralization of the acid in ethanol with calcium hydroxide. Similarly may be prepared the alkali metal, ethanolamine and methyl glucamine salts of the mono and diacetoxy acids.ALSO:Tablets and powders for oral use containing compounds of the formula <FORM:0807326/VI/1> wherein of R and R1 one is a lower acyl group and the other a hydrogen atom or the same or different lower acyl group ("lower" indicating 1-3 carbon atoms in the group) and their salts with inorganic and organic bases, for example, alkali metal, calcium, ethanolamine and methyl glucamine salts, are disclosed. Acid binding agents such as calcium carbonate or aluminium hydroxide gel are desirably added to the tableting mixture.
