titleOfInvention An improved fireproofing product resistant to high temperature and process for its manufacture
abstract Vermiculite for use with synthetic binders, e.g. resinous polymerization and condensation products, in coating compositions (see Group IV (a)), is prepared by expanding vermiculite, e.g. at temperatures between 600 DEG and 1300 DEG C., and flattening or rolling the granules obtained. The flattening may be effected by force of impact, millstones, presses or rollers which may rotate at different speeds to give a drawing effect. Preferably the expanded vermiculite granules are wetted with water or a solvent and flattened or rolled in a wet state. Mixtures of different granule sizes may be employed and the flattening or rolling in one or more stages, e.g. mixtures of lamin of different thicknesses may be obtained by rolling part of the vermiculite once and the remainder two or more times. Specification 806,438 is referred to.ALSO:Compositions comprise a synthetic binder and flattened expanded vermiculite. Specified binders are polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, butadiene-styrene copolymers, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-maleic acid terpolymers, unsaturated polyester resins with catalysts compatible therewith, epichlorhydrin resins and urea-formaldehyde resins. Silica, asbestos, aluminium, quartz and kieselguhr may be added. The vermiculite may be flattened, preferably after moistening with water or an organic solvent, by rolling, by force of impact, by millstones or by presses in one or more stages to produce flakes or different thicknesses. Mixtures of vermiculite of different granule sizes may be used. The binders, which may be plasticized e.g. with tricresyl phosphate or dibutyl phthalate, may be emulsified in water or dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene or white spirit, mixed with the flattened expanded vermiculite and the mixture coated on to materials, e.g. wood, metal, asbestos, paper, cork, fabrics, glass fibres, bricks, tiles, cement and bitumen, to fireproof, waterproof, impart thermal and sound insulation and condensation and corrosion resistance. The compositions may be incorporated in vinyl polymers, paper pulp and rubber as loading agents. Specification 806,438 is referred to.
