titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to binding agents and surface coating compositions, modified by aluminium-containing condensation polymers
abstract A binding agent or surface coating composition comprises: (i) a fatty oil, a natural or synthetic resin or a fatty oil modified natural or synthetic resin; and (ii) the aluminium containing resins of Specification 804,981. The preferred proportions are 5-50 per cent of (ii), by weight of (i). Oils specified include raw, bodied, styrenated, natural resin modified, dehydrated castor, linseed and linseed stand oils. Natural resins include heat-treated resins. Synthetic resins include alkyds (glyceryl-phthalate) which may be modified by drying oils (linseed), semi-drying oils (soya bean) and non-drying oils (castor oil), styrenated resins and phenol formaldehyde resins which may be oil modified (tung). Solvents specified include toluene, turpentine, xylene, benzene and petroleum hydrocarbons, white spirit, butanol, alcohols, ketones and esters. In examples: (1) linseed oil modified glyceryl-phthalate resin is mixed with a resin derived from butane-1 : 3-diol and an ethyl acetoacetate stabilized aluminium n-butylate; (2) as (1) but a butanol-ting-oil-modified phenol-formaldehyde resin and hexane triol; (3) as (1) but linseed oil and butane-1 : 4-diol; (4) a plasticized phenolic resin is mixed with a resin derived from diethylene glycol and an acetyl acetone-stabilized aluminium n-butylate; (5) a linseed stand oil is mixed with a trimethylolpropane/diethyl malonate-stabilized Al n-butylate resin; (6) a butanol - tung - oil - modified phenol - formaldehyde resin is mixed with a butane-1 : 3-diol/formyl acetophenone-stabilized Al n-butylate resin; (7) as (1) but-2-ene-1 : 4-diol; (8) as (1) but castor oil modified and but-2-yne-1 : 4-diol. The resins may be used as surface coatings, adhesives, moulding materials and printing inks. Specification 718,283 also is referred to.ALSO:Aluminium alcoholates are stabilized with compounds exhibiting keto-enol tautomerism as described in Specification 804,981. In additional examples, aluminium n-butylate is stabilized by refluxing for 30 minutes with (4) acetyl-acetone, or (6) formyl-acetophenone. Specification 718,283, [Group IV (a)], also is referred to.
