titleOfInvention Improvements relating to the production of ion-exchange resins
abstract Ion-exchange resins are produced by copolymerizing a compound containing one polymerizable double bond with a cross-linking agent comprising a ketone containing two polymerizable double bonds, each being part of a conjugated system with the carbonyl group, and introducing ion-exchange groups into the cross-linked polymer. The ketone may be divinyl, vinyl isopropenyl or diisopropenyl ketone. The ion-exchange groups may be introduced by an aftertreatment or by polymerizing compounds containing one polymerizable double bond and an ion-exchange group. In examples: (1) an anion-exchange resin is prepared by copolymerizing 91 per cent styrene and 9 per cent divinyl ketone by suspension polymerization, using azo-bis-isobutyronitrile as catalyst, ion-exchange groups then being introduced into the polymer by haloalkylation and amination: (2) a cation-exchange resin is prepared by sulphonating the copolymer prepared in Example (1); (3) a cation-exchange resin is prepared by copolymerizing divinyl ketone and glacial methacrylic acid in the presence of benzoyl peroxide catalyst; (4) an anion-exchange resin is prepared by copolymerizing b -diethylaminoethyl methacrylate and divinyl ketone in the presence of azo-bis-isobutyronitrile catalyst. Specifications 694,778, 774,386 and 748,234 are referred to. The Provisional Specification refers also to Specification 577,707, [Group IV].
