titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to resinous coatings and coating compositions |
abstract | Articles are coated by applying a composition which comprises a volatile liquid in which is dispersed polytetrafluoroethylene and dissolved or dispersed therein in an amount from 5 to 100 per cent by weight of the polymer, a thermosettable phenolaldehyde resin, removing the volatile liquid and heat-curing the remaining composition. The composition may also contain a film-forming material such as an acrylonitrile copolymer, or polyvinyl butyral, and a coalescing agent. The article may be a metal tank, a metal screen, a bonderized or untreated steel panel or have a surface of glass, asbestos, aluminium, copper, acrylic resin or ceramic. The aldehyde resin may be made by reacting a phenol such as monohydroxybenzene, cresol, xylenol, resorcinol, phenyl phenol, or a butyl phenol with formaldehyde or furfuraldehyde. Specified coalescing agents are furfuryl alcohol, tetramethylene sulphone, monoalkyl ethers of ethylene or diethylene glycol, diacetone alcohol, and dimethyl formamide. The volatile liquid may be water or a mixture of organic solvents selected from ethyl and butyl alcohols, methyl ethyl ketone, toluol, xylol and octane. The coatings are cured by heating. Specifications 631,504, 631,570, [both in Group IV (a)], and 761,928 are referred to.ALSO:A coating composition comprises a volatile liquid having dispersed therein polytetrafluoroethylene and dissolved or dispersed therein from 5 to 100 per cent by weight of the polymer a thermosettable phenol - aldehyde resin. The composition may also contain a film-forming material, e.g. an acrylonitrile copolymer or polyvinyl butyral and a coalescing agent for this material. The aldehyde resin may be made by reacting a phenol such as monohydroxybenzene, cresol, xylenol, resorcinol, phenyl phenol, or a butyl phenol with formaldehyde or furfuraldehyde. The exemplified resin is a condensate of monohydroxybenzene and formaldehyde. The copolymer may be a three-component copolymer of acrylonitrile, an acid selected from acrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, phenyl acrylic, or crotonic, and an ester of a monohydric alcohol with one of the above acid, or the copolymer may have four components, i.e. in addition to the above three allyl glycidyl ether, or a glycidyl ester of one of the above acids. Specified coalescing agents are furfuryl alcohol, tetramethylene sulphone, monoalkyl ethers of ethylene or diethylene glycol, diacetone alcohol, and dimethyl formamide. The volatile liquid may be water or a mixture of organic solvents selected from ethyl and butyl alcohols, methyl ethyl ketone, toluol, xylol, and octane. The compositions may be used for coating metal panels and tanks, copper wire, ceramics, glass fabrics, and fibres and films made from regenerated cellulose, polyacrylonitrile, and polyethylene terephthalate. The coating is cured by heat-treatment. Specifications 631,504, 631,570 and 761,928 are referred to. |
