titleOfInvention Moulding sand
abstract 801,579. Mould compositions. NATIONAL LEAD CO. Sept. 11, 1956 [Sept. 27, 1955], No. 27761/56. Class 83 (1). A moulding-sand composition having a green compressive strength of at least 2.4 1b. per square inch comprises sand and minor quantities of a grease thickening agent and a liquid lubricant. The sand component is generally 85-98 per cent of the whole. Examples of grease thickening agents are soaps wherein the positive ion may be an alkali metal such as Na, K, Li, or ammonium, or metals such as Mg, Ca, Zn, Ba, Al or Pb. The anionic portion of the soap may be a long-chain fatty acid such as lauric, palmitic or stearic acid, or it may be a cyclic or polycyclic acid of relatively high molecular weight such as abietic acid, or a rosin-acid generally or a naphthenic acid. Typical grease thickening agents of the soap class are lithium hydroxy stearate, aluminium hydroxy stearate, calcium stearate, potassium stearate, aluminium stearate, aluminium naphthenate and sodium abietate. Another class of grease thickening agents comprises organophilic, organic-treated colloidal silicate materials such as natural or synthetic colloidal clays or zeolite and colloidal silica, e.g. as described in Speciataion 664,830, [Group XXIX], and in U.S.A. Specifications 2,563,555, 2,583,606, 2,584,085, 2,657,149, 2,668,151, 2,693,863 and 2705,206. The liquid lubricant is non-aqueous and of organic character, and examples of hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, esters, and silicon derivatives are quoted, reference also being made to those listed in U.S.A. Specification 2,625,508. Finely divided additives of a particle-size 20-100 times or more smaller than the sand-particle size, such as iron oxide, silica flour or other silicate, ground borite, zircon or alumina may be added. Further, when using some of the organophilic organic treated colloidal silicate materials, such as those made from clay, with some lubricants, an activating-additive may allow a reduction in the quantity of clay &c. used. The additives are of low molecular weight and relatively high dielectric constant such as water, ethanol, methanol, acetone, propylene carbonate. Other additives such as powdered gilsonite or tar, comminuted air-blown asphalt, hydrogenated castor oil, carbon black, lamp black, and wood flour may be used. A large number of examples of specific compositions are quoted.
