titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to phthalocyanine and like colouring materials |
abstract | Phthalocyanines are made by heating pyromellitic acid or mixtures of carboxylic acids containing it (especially mixtures formed by oxidation of fuels) for about 3-8 hours) with urea or its thermal decomposition products in presence of a metal or a metal salt and, if required, a catalyst such as a phosphovanadate, phosphomolybdate, or boric acid. The acids may be replaced by their esters, anhydrides, ammonium salts, halides, imides, amides, or nitriles, and the conversion may be carried out by heating in a high-boiling inert solvent or under pressure in a low-boiling inert solvent. The products may be mixed with barium sulphate, titanium dioxide, or oxides of iron, aluminium or chromium or lead or zinc salt, e.g. chromates, to form pigments. In examples: (1) pyromellitic acid is heated with urea, nickel nitrate and ammonium molybdate; (2) a crude mixture of carboxylic acids, containing ash and picric acid, produced by nitric acid oxidation of hard coal, is heated with trichlorbenzene, copper chloride, urea and ammonium molybdate; (3) a mixture of acids, obtained by heating a crude coal oxidation product under pressure with water, is heated with urea, magnesium sulphate, and boric acid. |
