titleOfInvention Process of producing anhydrous zirconium salts of organic monocarboxylic acids
abstract Anhydrous zirconium salts of acetic acid and of fatty acids containing at least 4 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon group are obtained by heating zirconium tetrachloride with an excess of acetic acid or with the equivalent quantity of fatty acid dissolved in an organic solvent, and distilling off the hydrogen chloride together with the excess of acetic acid or the solvent. The removal of hydrogen chloride may be accelerated by the passage of an inert gas such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen or dry air. Specified solvents are benzene, carbon tetrachloride and petroleum ether. When preparing zirconium acetate it is advisable to react no more tetrachloride with excess of acetic acid than will ensure that the zirconium tetra-acetate remains in solution in the boiling glacial acetic acid. On cooling the acetate precipitates. It may be dried by the passage of nitrogen or dry air at 110-130 DEG C. When preparing zirconium salts of the higher acids, the solvent is completely removed. Examples describe the preparation of anhydrous zirconium acetate and stearate.
