titleOfInvention Iodine complexes of copolymers of n-vinyl pyrrolidones and nitrogen free vinyl and vinylidene compounds
abstract Iodine complexes made from copolymers of N-vinyl pyrrolidones with nitrogen-free vinyl compounds (see Group IV (a)) are used in disinfectant cleaning compositions. A disinfectant scrub soap comprises an aqueous solution of rosin, caustic soda, a sodium alkylarylsulphonate and the iodine complex of a vinyl acetate - N - vinyl - 2 - pyrrolidone copolymer. Sawdust moistened with propylene glycol and an aqueous solution of the above copolymer iodine complex forms a disinfectant sweeping compound. Specification 726,245, [Group IV (a)], is referred to.ALSO:Plutonium aluminium alloys for use as fuel rods in nuclear reactors are produced by mixing plutonium oxide with cryolite and adding the mixture, preferably in batches with stirring, to molten aluminium and maintaining the mass at a temperature between 1050 DEG and 1100 DEG C.ALSO:Iodine complexes with an iodine content of from 0.1 to 25 per cent are made from copolymers of a N-vinyl pyrrolidone and from 40 to 10 per cent of vinyl or vinylidene compounds containing less than 8 carbon atoms and no nitrogen atoms. The vinyl or vinylidene compounds may be vinyl methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl or isobutyl ethers, vinyl acetate, chloride, glycollate, formate, propionate or butyrate, acrylic or methacrylic acids, methyl acrylate or methacrylate, vinyl alcohol, acrolein or vinylidene chloride. The pyrrolidone may be N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone or 5-methyl-, 5-ethyl-, 3,3-dimethyl-, 3-methyl-, 3-ethyl-, 4-methyl-, 4-ethyl-, 3-phenyl-3-beta-diethylaminoethyl- or 5-hydroxymethyl-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidones. The copolymers with vinyl acetate may be completely or partially hydrolysed to yield the corresponding vinyl alcohol copolymer and terpolymer respectively. The iodine complexes are prepared by finely mixing or grinding the iodine with the copolymer, which may have a moisture content of up to 10 per cent, and the product may be heattreated at 40 DEG to 65 DEG C. The complexes may be used in the production of disinfectants, insecticides and protective coatings. In the form of stretched film the complexes tend to polarize transmitted light. Dilute aqueous solutions of the complexes may be used to proof fabrics against mildew. Mixed with a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, rosin, diatomaceous earth and methyl ethyl ketone the complexes can be used in anti-fouling coating compositions. A liquid-soap with disinfectant action is provided by an aqueous solution of the complex with rosin, caustic soda, and a sodium alkylarylsulphonate. Sawdust moistened with propylene glycol and an aqueous solution of the iodine complex forms a disinfectant sweeping compound. Specification 726,245 is referred to.ALSO:Iodine complexes made from copolymers of N-vinyl pyrrolidones and nitrogen-free vinyl compounds (see Group IV (a)) are used as germicides and pesticides. A dilute aqueous solution of the complex of a N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer is used to mildewproof fabrics. Anti-fouling coatings are formed by applying a mixture of the complex of a N-vinyl - 2 - pyrrolidone - vinyl acetate copolymer, rosin, diatomaceous earth, and a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer in suspension in methyl ethyl ketone. A disinfectant scrub soap comprises an aqueous solution of a vinyl acetate - N - vinyl - 2 - pyrrolidone copolymer iodine complex with rosin, caustic soda and a sodium alkylarylsulphonate. Sawdust moistened with propylene glycol and an aqueous solution of the above complex forms a disinfectant sweeping compound. Specification 726,245, [Group III], is referred to.
