titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of n-oxalkylated polycondensatio
abstract N-oxalkylated polyamides are made by reacting polyamides suspended in organic liquids with which they do not react, with alkylene oxides at elevated temperature, in the presence of catalysts. Specified alkylene oxides are ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, epichlorhydrin and 2-ethyl-2-methyl-oxacyclobutane. Organic liquids specified are aromatic, chlorinated aromatic, partially hydrogenated aromatic and aliphatic or cyclo-aliphatic hydrocarbons and ethers, e.g. toluene, xylene, chlorinated benzene, chlorinated naphthalene, tetrahydronaphthalene, benzine, cyclo-hexane and methylcyclo-hexane, decahydronaphthalene and dioxane. Catalysts specified are alkali metals, alkali metal oxides, hydroxides and alcoholates, organic bases and Friedel-Crafts catalysts, e.g. dimethylaniline, pyridine, boron fluoride, aluminium chloride and zinc chloride. In Examples: (1) to (3) and (5) powdered polyamincaproic acid is suspended in (1) decahydronaphthalene and reacted with ethylene oxide in the presence of sodium hydroxide; (2) tetrahydronaphthalene and reacted with ethylene oxide in the presence of potassium hydroxide; (3) tetrahydronaphthalene and reacted with epichlorhydrin in the presence of boron fluoride etherate; (5) tetrahydronaphthalene and reacted with ethylene oxide in the presence of sodium hydroxide; whilst in Example (4) a powdered co-polyamide derived from hexamethylene ammonium adipate and aminocaproic acid is suspended in tetrahydronaphthalene and reacted with ethylene oxide in the presence of sodium.
