titleOfInvention Cracking of oligomers of isobutene
abstract Isobutene is prepared by cracking oligimers thereof in the presence of a magnesium silicate catalyst containing 1-20 per cent by weight of magnesium calculated as magnesium oxide (see Group III) at 200-550 DEG C. Diisobutene is particularly suitable as starting material. Liquid or vapour phase conditions may be used, increased pressure may be necessary in the former and decreased pressure, e.g. 0.01-0.5 atmosphere, can be used in the latter. A catalyst grain size of 0.05-0.6 mm. is preferred and fixed or moving catalysts can be used. Throughputs of up to 1 litre of oligomer per Kg. of catalyst per hour in the fixed state or 10 litres with a moving catalyst can be used. Inert gases in an amount of 10-90 volume per cent may be used as diluents such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, ethane or propane. Regeneration of the catalyst is effected by burning off impurities with air. In examples catalysts containing varying amounts of magnesium are used to depolymerize diisobutene at 400 DEG C., 10.7 g. of diisobutene, 2 litres (measured at standard conditions) being led per minute through 150 ccs. of catalyst. No butene-1 is formed.ALSO:A synthetic magnesium silicate catalyst containing 1-20 per cent by weight of magnesium calculated as magnesium oxide is used to crack oligomers of isobutene to isobutene at 200-500 DEG C. (see Group IV (b)). The catalyst may be prepared by thermal treatment of silica and magnesium compounds such as the oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or oxalate or by coprecipitation, but preferably by impregnating silica with magnesium nitrate and heating to 500-900 DEG C. The silica to be impregnated is preferably in the form of shaped silica strings obtained by extruding a paste of silica with a solvent, cutting into 0.5-1 cm. lengths and drying. The catalyst can be used as a fixed bed or moving, and preferably has a grain size of 0.05-0.6 mm. Regeneration when necessary can be accomplished by burning off resinous impurities with air. In an example, 4 kg. of silica are treated with a solution of 2.83 kg. of Mg(NO3)26H2O in 38 litres of water, the liquid separated and the solid dried at 100 DEG C. and heated for 2 hours at 700 DEG C. The catalyst so formed had a weight ratio of silica to magnesium oxide of 9:1.
