titleOfInvention Matrix for ion exchange resins
abstract A three-dimensional cross-linked synthetic resin matrix having at least two dimensions each in excess of one cm., is formed by copolymerizing a polyvinylaryl and/or polyolefinic compound with a monomer/polymer solution of a monovinyl aryl and/or monovinyl aliphatic compound monomer containing no free COOH groups and at least 0.1 per cent of a polymer of the monomer. Specified monomers are styrene, vinyl toluene, vinylnaphthalene, alphamethylstyrene, ar-methylstyrene, ar-dimethylstyrene, ar-ethylvinylbenzene, ar-chlorostyrene, ar-methylvinyl naphthalene, ar-sec-butylstyrene, ar-trimethylstyrene, vinylchlorbenzene, vinylxylene, methylvinylketone, acrylic acid ester, and methacrylic acid ester. Specified poly compounds are divinyl benzene, ar-divinyltoluene, ar - divinylxylene, ar - divinylchlorobenzene, divinylnaphthalene, ar-divinylethylbenzene, trivinylbenzene, divinylether, butadiene, isoprene, dimethallyl, diallyl, and cyclopentadiene. The polymer matrix may be formed from more than 10 per cent of the monomer compounds and less than 50 per cent of the poly compounds. The resin may be prepared by partially polymerizing the monomeric compounds by bulk or solution polymerization so as to convert 0.1 to 60 per cent to polymer, mixing this solution with the poly compound and polymerizing by bulk or solution methods. The matrix may be formed as a flock which is then cut into a sheet, or the sheet may be formed by polymerizing in a vessel having two facing walls of large surface area with a small clearance in between. A plasticizer which may be added at any stage and non-polymerizable reinforcing material may also be present. The resins may be used to form ion-exchange resins. Specifications 794,426, 795,379, 797,192 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,366,007, 2,466,675, 2,500,149, 2,591,573, 2,591,574, 2,597,438, 2,597,439, 2,597,440, 2,614,099, 2,616,877 and 2,636,851 are referred to.
