titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of vitamin b
abstract Colloidal impurities are separated from aqueous concentrates containing Vitamin B12 in a process in which said impurities are precipitated from said concentrates by the addition of one or more water-soluble compounds of metals falling within the analytical groups 1, 2a, 2b, 3a or 3b capable of forming substantially water-insoluble compounds with said impurities. As water-soluble metal compounds there may be used water-soluble compounds of lead, mercury, tin, iron, aluminium and zinc. During or after treatment of the concentrates the pH is made alkaline, e.g. in the range 7-10. Examples describe the purification of the residue of the bacterial fermentation of sewage and of a concentrate obtained from a culture medium of the antibiotic oxytetracycline making use of lead acetate and aluminium sulphate solutions.
