titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the preparation of high molecular weight linear polymers of formaldehyde |
abstract | Formaldehyde polymers having a number average weight of at least 10,000, and of the general formula A(CH2O)nB, where n is at least 340 and A and B complementary portions of an organic chain transfer agent, AB, which has a degree of polymerization less than 10, and is selected from carboxylic acids having at least 2 carbon atoms, esters having at least 3 carbon atoms, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, and aromatic alcohols, acid anhydrides, amides, imides, imines, halides, carbonates, silicates, phosphites, phosphates, thiophanes, aralkyl ethers, sulphides, cyclic sulphoxides, nitro compounds having a hydrogen on the carbon atom to the nitro group and sulphur analogs of these compounds are made by polymerizing, e.g. continuously, substantially pure, anhydrous monomeric formaldehyde in the presence of a liquid hydrocarbon medium, a polymerization catalyst and a small amount of one of the above transfer agents. Specified agents are acetic, propionic, and thioacetic acid, ethylacetoacetate, amyl acetate, ethyl benzoate, butanol, cyclohexanol, cyclohexanethiol, benzyl alcohol, acetic anhydride, butyric anhydride, acetamide, propionamide, N-hydroxymethyl-phthalimide, methyl iodide, nonylanisole, cyclohexanimine, tert.-butyl chloride, acetamide, tributyl phosphite, bis(2-methoxyethyl) carbonate, thiophane, ethyl phenyl ether, cetyl ethyl sulphide, tetramethylene sulphoxide, tert.-dodecyl mercaptan, nitromethane, and polyethylene glycols having a degree of polymerization less than 10. The liquid hydrocarbon medium may be heptane, benzene, toluene, or cyclohexane. Catalysts mentioned are dimethyl di(hydrogenated tallow)-ammonium acetate, tetrabutylammonium laurate, aluminium isopropoxide, and triphenyl phosphine. The polymers may be spun into fibres or filaments, or formed into films, sheets, tubes, or rods. Specifications 753,299 and 796,862 are referred to. |
