titleOfInvention An organic isothiocyanate and fungicidal compositions containing same
abstract The invention comprises 4-ethylsulphonylphenyl isothiocyanate, which is prepared by the action of thiophosgene on 4-ethylsulphonylaniline in water. An example is given. The compound is used in fungicidal compositions (see Group VI).ALSO:Fungicidal compositions comprise dusts, suspensions, emulsions, smokes or aerosols containing 4-ethylsulphonylphenyl isothiocyanate as active ingredient and a diluent or carrier. The dusts contain a pulverulent solid diluent such as kaolin or talc. The suspension compositions contain a dispersing and/or suspending agent as carrier with or without a water-miscible organic solvent such as acetone and form a suspension on mixing with water. The emulsion compositions may contain a dispersing and/or suspending agent, an emulsifying agent and a non-volatile oil as carrier, or an emulsifying agent and an organic solvent such as xylene or an aromatic solvent boiling at 80-300 DEG C. and optionally a non-volatile vegetable or mineral oil such as liquid paraffin and a wetting agent. The smoke compositions contain an ignitable slow-burning composition such as chlorate and sucrose or thiourea. The aerosol compositions contain as carrier a volatile solvent such as acetone, or a high-boiling aromatic solvent such as xylene or a non-volatile oil such as vegetable oil and cyclohexanone or acetone, and optionally a volatile propellant p such as a mixture of chlorofluoro derivatives of methane and ethane. In examples, the active ingredient is mixed with (1) a condensate of formaldehyde and an alkyl aryl sulphonate as dispersing agent and kaolin and added to water to give a dispersion; (2) acetone, or (3) arachis oil and acetone, to give aerosol compositions; and (4), acetone and a condensate of a phenolic ether and ethylene oxide as dispersing agent, and added to water to give an aqueous dispersion.
