titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to treatment of cotton linters
abstract In the purification of cotton linters by treatment with aqueous caustic soda at an elevated temperature and pressure, the tendency of the linters to become less reactive is reduced by etherifying the linters, but only to such an extent that the etherified linters remain both alkali- and water-insoluble while retaining the fibrous structure of the unetherified linters, the etherification being effected prior to any substantial increase in the crystallinity of the linters due to the action of aqueous caustic soda. Ether substituents which may be introduced include hydroxyethyl, hydroxypropyl, hydroxybutyl, carboxymethyl, carboxyethyl, sulphoalkyl and cyanoalkyl. The etherified linters may be bleached, e.g. with chlorine, hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide, peroxide or permanganate, after the treatment with aqueous caustic soda. Comparative experimental results are given.
